Heated floors under tile: how DITRA-HEAT works
A heated tile floor brings the tile finish, membrane, heating layout and controls into one room plan. EM Tile supplies and installs the DITRA-HEAT systems listed in this guide, and we coordinate with a licensed electrician who makes the electrical connection. The installation timeline depends on the size and scope and is confirmed after a site review. Start by describing the room, the tile you want and the areas where floor warmth would be useful. Include the doorway, permanent fixtures and any adjoining finishes. This guide takes you through the choices to discuss before ordering tile and links to Schluter’s product information for further background.
Discuss your project ↗Understand the system at a planning level
DITRA-HEAT combines an uncoupling membrane with electric floor-warming cables and controls beneath tile. The membrane, heating layout and tile are considered together when planning the floor. The systems we install include DITRA-HEAT, DITRA-HEAT-PS, DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS and DITRA-HEAT-TB, with DITRA-HEAT-E-RS1 and DITRA-HEAT-E-WiFi thermostats. Tell us about the room and how you want to use the heated area before selecting components. Schluter’s current product information gives the manufacturer’s requirements for the assembly. A room drawing helps us discuss those requirements alongside the finish you are buying, the floor height and the connection coordinated with the electrician.
Describe the room and the comfort you want
Tell us which room will be tiled and where you expect to use the floor. A bathroom, laundry or another tiled space can have different fixtures and circulation areas. Identify the places where you stand or walk, and provide a drawing if the arrangement is still being designed. Share whether cabinetry, a vanity or other fixed items will remain in their current positions. These details help frame the discussion of the intended heated area without assuming that the entire room footprint will be heated. If you have a particular control preference, describe it early. Discuss your preferred heated areas with the room plan and the tile you have selected.
Distinguish room dimensions from the proposed heated area
A room measurement is useful, but the fixtures and boundaries within it also matter. Provide the floor plan with the intended positions of fixed items and doorways. Indicate any areas you want to discuss separately, rather than reducing everything to a single total area. The system layout needs review against the actual room and product requirements. Do not buy a heating component solely because its advertised coverage appears to match your rough room measurement. EM Tile supplies the DITRA-HEAT system for the agreed installation, so the layout and relevant specifications can be discussed as part of that scope. A clearly marked plan is more useful than an assumption that every visible square metre will be treated identically.
Review the selected tile before committing to the finish
Send the tile’s dimensions, thickness and product information with the heated-floor enquiry. Schluter’s product guidance includes suitability considerations for the type, thickness and format of the surface covering. A small mosaic should therefore be reviewed rather than assumed compatible with every floor assembly. If the supplier changes your selected product, provide the replacement details before the layout is treated as settled. This is also a reason to distinguish a showroom picture from the actual product you are purchasing. EM Tile clients choose and buy the tile, while the installation materials and DITRA-HEAT system are supplied within the agreed work. Send the actual tile product information with your enquiry.
Consider preparation, height and adjoining surfaces
Show the existing floor, thresholds and adjacent rooms in your photographs. If old tile needs to be removed, state that in the scope; EM Tile provides tile removal and debris take-away. The underlying surface and proposed floor build-up need to be reviewed before assuming the new finish will meet every neighbouring surface at the same level. Include doors, transitions and any fixtures that might be affected by the finished arrangement. Review the existing floor and the proposed build-up before deciding the final level. Explain what is being retained and what another trade will alter so the heating and tile installation can be considered within the wider room plan.
Coordinate the heating and electrical work
We coordinate with a licensed electrician who makes the electrical connection for the heated-floor system. Share any electrical arrangements already in place and tell us which controls you are considering. Keep the floor plan, fixture locations and tile product details together so the heating layout can be discussed with the room as a whole. If other electrical work is planned during the renovation, include it in the proposed sequence. The tile installation, controls and connection need to fit that sequence before the room is finished. Raise these questions during the project review, along with any building access or approval requirements.
Agree on controls and handover information
Controls are part of planning how you will use the heated floor. We work with the DITRA-HEAT-E-RS1 smart thermostat and DITRA-HEAT-E-WiFi thermostat. Let us know your preferred control and discuss its position alongside the room drawing and any other renovation work. Read Schluter’s product information for the model you are considering, and keep the relevant details with the heating plan. Mention whether walls, fixtures or cabinetry are changing so the installation and electrical coordination can be reviewed together. Asking about controls early keeps this decision connected to the floor layout instead of leaving it until after the tile has been selected.
Choose the tile look and plan the heated area
Browse the floor tile portfolio for colour, format and layout ideas. A room photograph can help you decide whether you prefer broad porcelain tiles, a quieter grid or a patterned finish. When you send an example, tell us which feature you like: the tile scale, grout contrast, doorway transition or overall colour. For the heating discussion, add your own floor dimensions, permanent fixtures and selected tile information. These details help connect the design you want with the heated area being planned. A separate sketch is useful where cabinetry or a shower changes the usable floor space. The floor tile service and heated-floor service pages offer related planning information.
Build a project brief that brings the decisions together
For a free estimate, include room photographs, approximate measurements, a floor plan and selected tile information. Mark fixed fixtures and areas you want to discuss for heating, and describe any existing floor removal. Share access conditions, your preferred timing and the status of electrical coordination or required client-arranged approvals. Every installation comes with our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty for as long as the original client owns the home — see the full terms in our FAQ; workmanship only — tile and materials are covered by their manufacturers’ warranties. The heated-floor installation timeline depends on the size and scope of your room. Start with the heated floor tile installation service page, and use the official DITRA-HEAT product information for system background. The next useful step is a review of your room and scope so the tile, heating components and electrical connection can be planned together.
Heating membranes and thermostat choices we work with
The systems we install are DITRA-HEAT, DITRA-HEAT-PS, DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS and DITRA-HEAT-TB. DITRA-HEAT is the membrane-based floor-warming system; DITRA-HEAT-PS uses a peel-and-stick membrane. DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS combines that peel-and-stick format with a thermal break, while DITRA-HEAT-TB is a floor-warming membrane with a thermal break. Controls we work with include the DITRA-HEAT-E-RS1 smart thermostat and DITRA-HEAT-E-WiFi thermostat. Identify the intended control and membrane with the room plan before purchasing tile. EM Tile supplies and installs the heating system, and we coordinate with a licensed electrician who makes the electrical connection.
